Impact

California

  • 2001-2002 Thirteen of ULC's 15 elementary schools exceeded their Academic Performance Index (API) growth targets. Seven of ULC's 9 middle schools improved their scores, and both ULC high schools exceeded their growth targets.

  • 2000-2001 All 17 of ULC's elementary schools exceeded their API growth targets. Four of ULC's 6 middle schools and its single high school improved their scores.

  • Between 1999 and 2001, ULC sites Laurel Elementary and Rosecrans Elementary posted the highest and third highest gains, respectively, in SAT-9 scores in Compton Unified School District.

  • In 2001, ULC model sites Elizabeth and Foshay Learning Centers were 2 of only 6 LAUSD high schools to receive cash awards from the state for progress in student achievement. Foshay has been twice named to Newsweek's "Top 100 high schools."

Georgia

  • In 2002, Atlanta Public Schools honored King Urban Learning Center for meeting its student achievement growth targets; King was the only middle school in the district to meet at least 70% of its targeted growth.

  • King's success rate in eighth-grade math rose from 25% in 2000 to 47% in 2002 and in reading from 35% to 69% in the same period.

Oregon

  • Student attendance has increased from 92.5% in 2001 to 94.8% in 2003 at Waldo Middle. Students posted 14 to 21% improvements in state Reading exams and 12 to 23% improvements in state Mathematics exams.

Utah

  • Urban Learning Centers is the premiere Comprehensive School Reform (CSR) provider in the state of Utah. In the 2002-2003 school year, ULC served 14 schools in Utah, the most number of any CSR provider.
