Urban Learning Centers
The Urban Learning Centers initiative combines components from the Partnership's Strategic Leadership, Transformed Schools and Connected Communities focus areas into a comprehensive school reform design.
Three components have consistently been demonstrated to transform high-need urban schools into communities that raise and sustain student achievement. The Urban Learning Centers model is comprehensive in its focus on these components: Governance and Management engages learning community members in decision-making and ensures that the Learning Center can improve and evolve; Teaching and Learning is designed to ensure that all students are taught in a community of learners using effective educational practices; and Learning Supports establishes new strategies to overcome barriers to student learning by addressing the health and well being of students and their families.
Urban Learning Centers also incorporates the extensive use of advanced technology as an essential element for implementation of the design and tailors these components based on each school's needs, priorities and goals.
Urban Learning Centers is one of only eleven school improvement designs approved by New American Schools, a nonprofit organization nationally recognized for its leadership in education reform.
