Transition to Teaching: Mathematics And Science Teacher Education Readiness (M.A.S.T.E.R.)Program
Program Overview
The Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP), in collaboration with the Los Angeles Unified School District and California State University Dominguez Hills, was recently awarded a U.S. Department of Education grant for the development, implementation and evaluation of the Transition to Teaching Program: Mathematics And Science Teacher Education Readiness (M.A.S.T.E.R.) program. The program was designed to respond to the critical shortage of math and science teachers in inner-city schools by recruiting recent graduates and career-transition professionals from local industry. The goal is to employ over 100 new math and science teachers for Los Angeles middle and high schools.
Program Features
- Program participants will be able to enroll in coursework for a University Intern teaching credential and immediately begin serving their communities as a math or science teacher in local middle and high schools.
- Teacher preparation will occur on site in the schools, guided by a team of expert teachers, university faculty and public school administrators.
- During each semester university intern participants will take classes two days a week while teaching full time and earning a salary as a classroom teacher.
- Program participants will recieve coaching and support from both veteran teachers and university professors.
- Successful participants in the program will receive a preliminary CLAD (Cross Cultural Language and Academic Development) teaching credential by June or December, 2004--the first-level teaching credential for the State of California.
