The Los Feliz Area of the Los Angeles River

Los Feliz area of river from foot bridge
A view up the Los Angeles River from the foot bridge in the Los Feliz area. This section of the river lacks a concrete floor. Arundo, willow, and grasses thrive in the sandy bottom. Check to see what El Niño has done to this area.

Foot bridge at Los Feliz This is the only foot bridge that spans the Los Angeles River. It is located just south of Los Feliz Boulevard. However, several foot paths, bike trails and equestrian trails exist in segments alongside parts of the river.

North East Trees (with the help of the California Dept. of Transportation, the city and county of Los Angeles, and FoLAR) has begun to plant trees along a ten mile section of the Los Angele River and the Arroyo Seco. They hope to create the Los Feliz Riverwalk, as part of the larger Arroyo Seco/Los Angeles River Greenbelt. Native trees will be planted along bikepaths, equestrian trails and mini-parks in an effort to enhance recreation.
Looking downstream towards Frogtown.

Looking down the river from the foot bridge we are looking south, towards Elysian Park andDodger Stadium. This photo was taken in October 1995. Almost all this water is reclaimed water that is released into the river by the DWP near the Sepulveda basin. About 80% of the water that now runs down the river is reclaimed water. Normally the river would be dry most of the year. Some hope that a Los AngelesRiver Bikeway could be constructed along the river that would eventually link theSan Fernando Valley anddowntown Los Angeles. Thisarea would be an essentialpart the the bikepath.

Tree trunk at base of bridge. A close look at the base of the Los Feliz bridge shows the power of the water during the storm season. Rushing water can uproot trees and move large boulders.
