Numerous dry stream beds work their way down the hills of the San Fernando Valley. Here is where the hillside runoff from winter storms first meets concrete. The head waters of the river are channelized and will later become the Los Angeles River. There are now over 400 miles of concrete-lined tributaries that feed into the main channel. 9
Within a few hundred feet the shallow concrete slopes direct the water into a vertically-walled drainage system which will guide the runoff through the metropolitan Los Angeles area. The trip will take over 50 miles and will pass through several cities.
