Just a Little Memory

Just a little remembered memory of the river when I was growing up in Long Beach so many years ago. The big flood in I think 1956, my dad worked for the DWP, and we lived below the flood line-we had to evacuate our home, and I remember going to our boat tied up in the harbor, across from the Matson docks...pretty scary as the tides were unusually high that year as well, and caused many barges to slip their moorings....

Also, when I was older, and married, in the late 1970's, there is an area that is near the old Taylor Yard off of San Fernando Road, we used to call it Frog Hollow, as there seemed to be sooo many frogs living in that particular bend of the river right near the old S.P. main yard there. When the river would flood, we used to worry about all of the froggys washing downstream, then in a few days, we would hear the loud crookings, and know they were alright. It is nice to see that someone else is caring for the river, and not letting it go to hell like the old red cars of my youth!

the Missouri, in Blair Nebraska.
