L.A. River Connection - An Interdisciplinary Unit

Social Studies/Multicultural
Student study the history of the Los Angeles River and its effects on the history of Los Angeles; human impact on the river; Native American use of resources; and land use and environmental issues.
Science Inquiry
Student pose their own questions, design their own investigations, conclude and construct their own meaning. (See L.A. River Student Research)
Mathematics
Students measure the pH and chemical components of river water. Students learn to sample, graph data, and see mathematical relationships. Population density and change are calculated.
Art
Students artwork show the view of the Los Angeles River closest to their neighborhood

L.A. River Connection

Technology
Students record data and discuss results from river investigations using telecommunications.

Students visit other websites related to rivers.
Science Concepts
The abiotic and biotic components of the river ecosystem are dynamic and interdependent.

The river has helped shape and erode the physical land features.
Language Arts
Secondary students read science articles on river channelization; river biota; etc. Elementary students read core literature books including Heron Street and A River Run Wild. Students write and defend orally position papers on river issues.

Themes: Systems and Interactions; Pattern of Change; and Evolution
