Student Research on Waste and Recycling

Question: How many days will it take the earthworms to "recycle" chopped carrots back into soil?

Hypothesis: Earthworms will feed on the chopped carrots, and in a short time the worms' waste products from digesting the carrots will produce a super-rich soil called worm castings.

Experimental Design: A small plastic tub measured 1'x2'x8" (WxLxH) is filled with soil. The tub is divided into halves by a plastic divider. One side is labeled A and the other side is labeled B.

Chopped carrots are buried in both halves of the plastic tub. Earthworms are placed directly into one tub. (side A) On the other side of the tub no worms are added. (side B)

Data Generated: The students will compare and contrast the two sides A and B, respectively, the side with worms and the side without worms. They will measure how long it takes for the chopped carrots on each side, A and B, to be changed back into soil.

Graphs used will be a Line Graph and A Pie Chart. Also, a coordinate graph will be included as an added feature for instructing ordered pairs. A game called Find the Earthworms will be the variation of the game "Battleship".
