RECYCLING

Recycling saves resourcesRecyling is the process of using resources more than once. Steel is the most recycled material with 70% of it being recycled. Aluminum is recycled at about a 50% rate. These and other metals such as copper, iron, and brass can be melted down and reused indefinately. Paper can be recycled about 4 times before it must be thrown away.

The Golden Age of recycling in the United States was during World War II, when a 50% recycling rate was acheived by citizens supporting the war effort. Today Japan recycles at a 50% rate, the highest peacetime rate of any country.

Recycling programs have come a long way in the 1990s. Now Los Angeles residents have several programs to participate in.

Resources are not truly recycled until they are bought back and used again. Therefore, it is important to buy products made from recycled resources to complete the process. As more consumers committ to buying recycled products, the price for those products will go down.
