Identifying Butterflies Using a Database
Objectives: In this activity, students will use the Internet and books to develop a database that can be used to identify the common butterflies of Los Angeles.
Computer Equipment: Internet access and a database program such as Microsoft Access, AppleWorks, or ClarisWorks.
Procedure:
Creating a New Database
1. Create a folder on a floppy disk called Butterflies.
2. Open Appleworks or Clarisworks by double clicking the icon on the desktop or by going to Applications in the Apple Menu.
3. Select Database.
4. Enter in these new fields: Common Name (text), Scientific Name(text), Family (text), Description (text), Image(Image or multimedia), Credited Source of Image(text), Habitat(text), General Distribution(text), Larval Food(text), Nectar Food(text), Interesting Facts(text).
Entering Data Into A Database
1. Using your guidebook enter information for the Monarch butterfly and Cabbage White butterfly.
2. Resize the window so that it is only takes up the top half of your monitor screen.
3. Open the web browser, Internet Explorer or Netscape.
4. Type in the web address for Target Science http://www.laep.org/target/
5. On the right red menu, select Butterflies in the City, from the new window select Common Butterflies in Los Angeles.
6. Read the selection.
7. Click on view butterflies.
8. Find the Gulf Fritilary and enter in the data from this site.
Entering Images Into A Database
1. Go to Yahoo http://www.yahoo.com and search for CalPhotos (http://www.dlp.cs.Berkeley.edu/matrix.html)
2. Go to CalPhotos
3. Search for Monarch Butterfly
4. Select an image of a Monarch.
5. Check the copyright regulations.
6. Right click on the image and save the image in your folder with the file name Monarch.
7. Select your Appleworks database file.
8. Select the field for Monarch butterfly image.
9. In the Top Menu, select File and then Insert. In the pop up window, locate File Format and select All Available. Locate and select the file name for the image of the monarch butterfly.
10. Go back to the Internet site and copy the name credited photographer.
11. Paste the name of the photographer in your database in the field credited source of image
12. Repeat this procedure for locating an image of a Cabbage White and Gulf Fritilary. Insert the image into your database.
