Planning Worksheet
MULTI-GRADE UNIT FOCUS:
To establish a rigorous hands on scientific investigation of the feeding habits of birds, and to present the conclusions from that investigation using appropriate technology.
QUESTION:
Does the color of the feeder make a difference to birds?
HYPOTHESIS:
Yes, birds will be more attracted to brightly colored feeders.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN:
Independent variable: Color of feeder
Dependent variable: Amount of food consumed
Confounding variables: Location of feeders; design of feeders
Equipment needed: Bird feeders (soda bottles & wood); bird food
Procedures:
1. Design and create five uniform bird feeders
2. Color four feeders (green, blue, purple, orange) and leave one clear
3. Place same amount of food (by weight) in each feeder
4. Hang the feeders in close proximity and similar areas
5. Weigh the feeders each week to determine the amount of food eaten
DATA GENERATION:
Sample size: 5 feeders
Number of samples: Once a week for six weeks
