Background Information

In order to teach this unit on birds effectively, teachers should have a solid background knowledge of the subject. It is recommended that they research the general subject by looking at the resources listed in tips for teachers and the Museum of Natural History website. In particular, teachers should be familiar with the physical characteristics of local birds, including coloring, size, tail and wing shape. Prior to beginning the unit, teachers should also look at different beak sizes and shapes, noting the feeding habits of each. Teachers should be sure to familiarize themselves with the equipment for the tasks, including use of binoculars and any timing devices.

There are several other websites that change content regularly. See the Target Science Birds in the City homepage for updated site information.
