The standards addressedin the investigation were taken from the State of California "Science ContentsStandards Grade K-12"

Model of Standard-Based Instruction

K-  2. Different types of plants andanimals inhabit the Earth..

As a basis for understandingthis concept students should know:

a. how toobserve and describe similarities and differences in the appearance and behavior of plantsand animals (e.g.,seed-bearing plants and birds)

c. how toidentify major structures of common plants and animals (e.g.,wings, beaks, legs and feet).

 

First Grade- 2. Plants and animals meettheir needs in different ways.

As a basis for understandingthis concept students should know:

a. differentplants and animals inhabit different kinds of environments and have external features thathelp them thrive in different kinds of places.

b. animals needwater and food and may also use plants for shelter and nesting.

c. how to inferwhat animals eat from the shapes of their teeth. (e.g.,sharp teeth: eats meet; flat teeth:eats plants)

 

Second Grade- 2. Plants and animals havepredictable life cycles.

As a basis for understandingthis concept students should know:

a. organisms reproduce offspring of their own kind. The offspring resembletheir parents and each other.

c. many characteristics are inherited from their parents. Somecharacteristics are caused by, or influenced by, the environment.

d. there is variationamong individuals of one kind within a population.
