Cooperative Groups

Project Inquiry - Pigeon Study

At 49th Street School, the topic was pigeons in Mr. Bledsoe's First Grade Class.  Aside from the students, plenty of willing pigeons from the cafeteria volunteered their time for this experiment. Working in cooperative groups, students first discussed what they thought of when they thought of pigeons. (Their ideas are featured in the flipchart below.) Flipchart of student group observationsNext the children were given pictures of eight different types of pigeons: Blue-bar, Checker, Red-bar, Red, Spread, White, Pied-Splash, and Pied-White flight.  After a brief discussion in their groups, the students moved outside to observe the pigeons in action. In groups of four, they counted the different types of pigeons. Upon returning to class they charted their observations. (A student example is featured below.)
The students enjoyed studying about pigeons. Below you can see and hear their work - don't forget to click on each of the impressions!
