Target Science

Program Components

K-12 science Dialogues:

Target Science provides a series of startup meetings for cluster schools to examine science reforms, assess school science needs, and strategize solutions.

K-12 Science Leadership:

Teacher representatives from 103 schools in 11 feeder complexes form regional teams to plan and implement teacher professional development and projects involving parents and students.

  • K-12 Science Leadership Team meetings--held monthly in four regions to plan professional development and K-12 articulation projects
  • Leadership Academy--held in fall and winter to strengthen leadership skills of teacher leaders and to share information
  • Cluster/complex projects--special projects designed to meet cluster/complex science needs.

Target Science On-line [URL: www.lalc.k12.ca.us/target] Part of LALCNet, Target Science On-line is open to all K-12 science teachers to share professional development information, resources, inquiry-based lessons, and interactive student experiments via web pages, e-mail, and newsgroups. Partners in science and Industry:

Scientists and engineers pair with K-12 Science teachers to develop and implement science investigations and projects and provide role models for students.

K-12 Science Professional development:

  • Leadership Academy and Retreat--leadership development emphasizing reform issues in science education and interpersonal leadership skills.
  • Science Explorations--K-12 science workshop series given in four regions incorporating community experts, field trips, and inquiry lessons.
  • Science Classroom Demonstrations-to demonstrate inquiry--based and constructivist science instruction for all students.

  • Telecommunications in the Science Classroom-- professional development in integrating telecommunications and multimedia into science teaching and learning.
  • School Site Staff Development--specially designed professional development tailored to meet a school's science needs.
  • Grant Writing Workshops to develop projects and write proposals to submit to various funders and to LAEP Small Grants program.
  • UCLA Science Project--off track institutes on Urban Science, Leadership and Technology.

Family Science Events:

Teachers, secondary students, and Partners provide inquiry-based activities to parents and students that demonstrate the importance of science for all students and offer suggestions to parents in helping their children learn science.
