Target Science
The Science and Math Initiative offers intensive professional development to nearly 300
K-12 teachers, who reach more than 16,000 students, to improve teaching and learning in these critical subjects. For more than 20 years, the Initiative has offered workshop series and institutes to increase teachers’ content knowledge and enhance their skills in teaching science and math. In South, East and central L.A., networks of teachers meet monthly to help each other develop effective strategies and curricula aligned with state science standards and district instructional guides.

Mathematics
The Urban Education Partnership’s Math Initiative strives to improve mathematics education for all children particularly those in low-performing schools in order to increase the number of students enrolled in high level mathematics classes. The Initiative currently has two programs:
Integrating Technology into Math and Science- this program offers summer training for 30 grade 4-12 teachers to increase student use of technology in mathematics problem solving, investigations, data collection and analysis, and reporting/presentations. Model math lessons that incorporate technology can be found at Math Initiative
Baldwin Park Math Science Partnership- along with partners, Occidental College and BPUSD, this program offers 80 hours of intensive professional development and in-class coaching that focuses on the Algebra strand in grades 6-8 and Lesson Study.
