The Los Angeles Educational Partnership will offer a free Grant Writing Workshop for middle school teachers applying for a Chase Active Learning Grant. The Deadline to apply for a Chase grant has been extended by the national organization until March 31, 2000.
The workshop includes individualized technical assistance to help grant seekers to complete their applications. It will take place on Monday, March 6, 2000 from 3:30 to 5:00 pm at the Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP), 315 W. 9th Street, Suite 1110, Los Angeles. Attendance at a workshop is not an application requirement. The Chase Manhattan Foundation is offering grants of up to $5,000 to middle school teachers who engage their students in ambitious and innovative projects aimed at introducing them to hands-on learning activities.
Grant funds may be used for all activities directly related to active learning instruction, such as, staff development, instructional materials and supplies, CAL on-site and off-site projects, workshops and seminars. Recipient teacher representatives will also be invited to an expenses-paid annual National Chase Active Learning Program Conference in New York City. LAUSD schools containing middle-level grades may apply. Schools with special education populations between the ages of 10- and 15-years-old also may apply.
Grants are sponsored by Chase Manhattan Bank Foundation and managed by the Public Education Network. Grants will be screened by the Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP), LAUSD and Chase representatives.
Active learning involves a wide variety of hands-on student activities that support improved academic performance, such as discovery learning ; experiential learning; implementing creative and critical thinking and problem solving activities; increasing physical movement and artistic expression; using interactive and computer-based technology; and developing peer-assisted learning strategies.
The Chase Manhattan Foundation, with the assistance of the Public Education Network (PEN), a national association representing 45 local education funds including (LAEP), teamed up in 1997 to offer the CAL Grants to eleven school districts nationwide, including the Los Angeles Unified School District. "The program has enabled hundreds of educators in over 200 middle schools to learn more effective instructional strategies and better teaching," said Martha Graham, Vice President of Chase Manhattan Bank.
Applications are due by March 31, 2000 and must be mailed to LAEP at 315 W. 9th Street, Suite 1110, Los Angeles, CA 90015.
