Science Teachers Explore JPL

“Brainstorming ideas to live on Mars is a great way to get students to realize that they are the future engineers of our wildest dreams,” said a high school teacher who participated in LAEP’s professional development series “Science Across the City: Discoveries and Dilemmas.”

Science teachers in the LAEP network spent two days in November exploring JPL with a team of scientists. Teachers deepened their understanding of solutions-based learning through JPL’s Imagine Mars project. This was the second in a series of science-related workshops made possible by the Amgen Foundation.

An exhibition that documents the journey of thousands of Los Angeles Unified School District students is on display at the Bridge Gallery in City Hall for just one more week, so be sure to stop by and check it out. The installation entitled "What is in your heart? - The world is listening to students" is a unique collection of drawings and prose that captures the dreams, hopes, and ideas of high school students across Los Angeles.

“What is in your heart? - The world is listening to students” is the result of a two-year collaboration between artist Petra Eiko, Los Angeles Education Partnership (LAEP), and seven schools in Los Angeles Unified School District. These schools, supported by LAEP's Humanitas Initiative, implement an interdisciplinary, thematic instructional model. They include: the Social Justice Humanitas Academy at Cesar Chavez Learning Academies, Humanitas Academy at Santee Education Complex, Academy of Medical Arts at Carson High School, Humanitas SLC at Grant High School, Humanitas School of Arts and Media at Lincoln High School, Humanitas Art School at Roosevelt High School, and Green Cities and Transportation at San Fernando High School.

The Bridge Gallery is located zone the third floor of Los Angeles City Hall: 201 N. Main Street, Los Angeles, CA 90012. Visiting hours: Monday-Friday 8am-5pm. Free.
