Awards Given to Three Humanitas Teachers

Of the seven Los Angeles area teachers who received the 2012 Margot Stern Strom Teaching Award, three of them are Humanitas teachers working in LAEP Pilot Schools.  Worldwide, 40 teachers were selected for this year’s award based on classroom projects that, according to their website, “investigate historic and recent events that have led to genocide and mass violence in order to combat prejudice with compassion, indifference with participation, and myth and misinformation with knowledge.”

Since 2006, the Margot Stern Strom Teaching Award has given annually by Facing History and Ourselves, an international educational and professional development organization whose mission is to engage students of diverse backgrounds in an examination of racism, prejudice and anti-Semitism in order to promote the development of a more humane and informed citizenry.

Humanitas teacher-led design teams supported by LAEP implement an interdisciplinary, thematic instructional model. By developing teachers’ skills and offering enriching learning opportunities, the LAEP Humanitas initiative has provided thousands of low-income students of color with an opportunity to gain a solid education and prepare for college and a career.

Congratulations to:

  • Merri Weir, Academy of Medical Arts at Carson High School
  • Tim Knipe, Social Justice Humanitas Academy at Cesar Chavez Learning Academies
  • Estelle Ost, Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology at Esteban E. Torres High School
