Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences

Sponsored by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and the Urban Education Partnership's Humanitas program, the Media Literacy seminar attempt to educate students on the role and effect of the media in their lives. Topics include the media's role, the effects the media has on behavior and how the media may perpetuate stereotypes.

In the past, students have sampled film clips from the films Rebel Without a Cause, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Cocoon, Dangerous Minds, Philadelphia, The Truman Show, The Nutty Professor, True Lies and various documentary footage. Afterwards, students answer questions about how they see themselves represented in movies and television and discuss how they might go about creating their own film or TV show. They also discuss the media's entertainment, commercial, educational, political, informational and socializing roles.
