Essential Questions:

  • By looking at the work of various artists how has "the love affair between American society and the automobile" been reflected?
  • From your research, what trends have you seen regarding automobiles and highways through the culture and history of the Los Angeles-California area?
  • You are the artist reflecting society today through your eyes, look at the automobile and highways of travel, what are your photographs going to say about our society?
  • How might your views change regarding the automobile and/or highways from the viewpoint of an environmentalist?  highway engineer?  car designer?

Unit Objectives:
Students will...

  • Research and Analyze two works of art regarding streets/ highways located at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art .
  • Identify art trends with regards to the automobile and highways.
  • Discuss and reflect cultural influences reflected in the art piece and their own work.
  • Discuss the popular culture of American Life through the automobile from 1900 to present.
  • Solve the problem of what and how to photograph their own highway project.
  • Use computer for research, background knowledge and publishing the project.
  • Use camera as a communication tool with cumulative knowledge of composition.

Unit Culminating Assessment:

    Writing Component
  • Keep a diary
  • Write a two page article regarding your highway in the style of Huell Houser’s article regarding Figueroa Blvd.
  • Refer to Language Arts Standards:
    Make the fold out book to display the photographs and written captions.

Time Allotment:
3 weeks
