Satire in the American Dream as a Social Commentary

Essential Questions:

  • How are satire, sarcasm, and irony used in everyday American culture?
  • How have satire, sarcasm and irony been used in fine art and American literature?
  • Why do we need to recognize satire, sarcasm, and irony in our daily llife?

Unit Objectives:

  • Distinguish between satire, sarcasm, and irony through cartoons in daily paper
  • Analyze the use of satire in art and literature as a social comment
  • Create written and visual texts that bring attention to a social concern

Unit Culminating Assessment:

  • Students will write an essay examining a cartoon, another piece of art, or a piece of literature analyzing the satire in the piece of work. Students will write a piece of literature or create a work of art examining a social concern in a satiric manner.

Time Allotment:
5 sixty minute periods, plus 3 weeks of novel reading
