Overview of Performance Assessment:

  • Families are fundamental to understanding the tensions, conflicts, and challenges of American life.  Socialization within the family is the process by which children acquire the values, beliefs, and standards of behavior that are expected in their culture.  It is important for adolescents to understand their place in the world by understanding the unit of family and the role it plays in our culture.  Through literature, the arts, and other curriculum areas, the institution and value of “family” will be explored and analyzed.  Students through various activities will be able to appreciate the dynamics of relationships within the family structure and the interdependence between the family and society in which we live.

Students will appreciate how language arts, the visual arts and life skills reflect the cultural perception of the family and the issues arising from the dynamics of the members within the unit.  They will discern the differences in family units and the interdependence of the family and society of which they are a part.  They will perceive themselves as living in a world whose economic, social, and cultural dynamic are largely influenced by the family unit.
