Butterflies in the City

TEACHERS IN THE LOS ANGELES EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP'S Target Science teacher network will find out everything they ever wanted to know about butterflies and then some, during a five-part workshop series titled Butterflies in the City.

Implemented by Target Science teachers in the South Central area of Los Angeles, the workshop will feature a field trip to the butterfly preserve at the U.S. Navy Defense Fuel Station in San Pedro so that participants can study butterflies in their natural environment.

Other classroom-based activities will include a lecture by butterfly expert Rudi Mattoni; a study and exploration of butterfly anatomy; and an in-depth look at the processes of natural selection, extinction and evolution. Workshop participants will also hear from teachers who have established butterfly gardens at their schools and learn how to browse the World Wide Web for classroom resources on butterflies.

"This workshop series is a tremendous opportunity for teachers to get information about the butterflies and their habitat," said Target Science Academic Director Esther Zack.

With full attendance and homework, teachers participating in the series will receive one salary point credit and $150 worth of materials to do the activities from the workshop with their students.

Target Science teacher network has more than 2,000 teachers promoting scientific thinking for all children. Regardless of ethnicity or socio-economic background, these teachers believe children should be able to inquire, reason, problem solve and communicate. Target Science is spearheaded by K-12 teachers whose overarching mission is to empower all children to be scientific thinkers.
