Teaching the Holocaust:
A Conference for Educators

THE UNITED STATES HOLOCAUST MUSEUM will present "Teaching The Holocaust: A Conference For Educators." This conference, presented in conjunction with the exhibition, "Remember The Children, Daniel's Story" will take place at the California Science Center in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, November 13, 1998.

The primary mission of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum is to inform Americans about the unprecedented tragedy of the Holocaust, to remember those who suffered, and to inspire visitors to contemplate the moral implications of their choices and responsibilities as citizens of a democracy in an interdependent world.

The Museum strives to convey the history and lessons of the Holocaust through a wide range of educational programs for students and services for educators. "Remember The Children, Daniel's Story" is one of the Museum's primary vehicles for teaching the Holocaust to students, children, and their families.

The conference is designed for elementary, middle, and high school teachers who would like to learn more about teaching the Holocaust. In addition to visiting the exhibition, teachers will participate in a series of workshops on Holocaust education. These include sessions that deal with basic pedagogical issues and the use of literature and oral histories in the teaching of the Holocaust.

Speakers at this conference include Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, Dorot Professor of Modern Jewish and Holocaust Studies, Emory University, and Chair of the Museum's Education Committee; Dr. Joan Ringelheim, Director of Education at the Museum, and Alexandra Zapruder, Exhibition Educator, "Remember The Children, Daniel's Story," at the Museum. Workshop sessions at this conference will be conducted by various members of the Museum's Education Division including Stephen Feinberg, Coordinator, Mandel Teacher Fellowship Program, and Amy Rubin, Program Coordinator for the Oral History Department.
