LAUSD teachers prepare for English-only instruction

LAUSD Adopts Four-Part Plan for Prop. 227 Implementation

TO COMPLY WITH MANDATES OF PROPOSITION 227, the Los Angeles Unified School District has developed a four-part plan.

The first options allow children with limited English skills to apply for waivers into bilingual classes or to go directly into mainstream English classrooms. Two additional options have been developed by the District. "Model A" allows students to be taught primarily in English with Bilingual aides and peer tutors providing assistance. "Model B" classrooms will also be taught in English, but certified bilingual teachers will develop concepts in a students native language.

More information about implementation is available in this question and answer article from the L.A. Times. The LAUSD will also broadcast a question and answer session on KLCS, the district television station from 8:30 to 10 a.m Monday, August 3.
