Do you measure up? Check out the California Standards for the Teaching Profession
Ahmanson, LAEP to Award Excellent Teaching

THE L.A. EDUCATIONAL PARTNERSHIP'S Excellence in Education Awards have the dual purpose of recognizing outstanding educators and highlighting for the general public the practices that contribute to student learning. The awards will go to educators who demonstrate exemplary practices that can be shown to have a measurable impact on student learning. We are offering awards in the following categories:

Teachers (Groups or departments of two or more teachers working collaboratively to promote student academic achievement -- 10 awards of $5,000 per team)

Schools (A school in which the entire faculty is focused on the academic achievement of students. Families of schools may also apply in this category -- 3 awards of $10,000 each)

Communities (A school or family collaborative where a substantial number of teachers, parents and community members are deeply involved in contributing to the academic success of students -- 3 awards of $10,000 each)

The application process described in the attachment is simple and allows each teaching team, school, or learning community to describe how it exemplifies the California Standards for the Teaching Profession. Along with describing the manner in which it is meeting the standards, each team must describe outcome measures that document student achievement.

To request an application by mail or to make a nomination, phone LAEP at (213) 622-5237 or email your request to grants@lalc.k12.ca.us. Eligibility is limited to Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) pre-K through 12th grade teachers or schools for the 1999 awards. The application deadline is April 9, 1999.

All applications will be reviewed by a panel of educators and community representatives. Finalists will be visited by a team of educators who will interview applicants, talk with students, observe teachers in action and review the learning environment. Both the original application and the site reviews will be used to select the winners in each of the three categories.

Award funds must be used to help further the exemplary work of the winners. Funds may be used for materials, professional development activities, or other appropriate uses, not including cash payments to the awardees. Applications are due by April 9, 1999. Award winners will be announced by June 1999, and will be honored at an Awards Celebration on June 10, 1999.
