Early Head Start

doe-logoThe Florence/Firestone area is one of the highest risk communities in Los Angeles. Located in South LA, there are almost 5,000 children age 0-3 in a 3 square mile area, almost all from low-income, Latino, Spanish-speaking families – and very few resources. Our Early Head Start program, supported by a grant from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, promotes the healthy development of children from prenatal to age 3 and the self-sufficiency of their families. The long-term goal of this program is to improve children’s success in school and their families’ involvement in their child’s education and community.

Services from a comprehensive, home-based program provide weekly home visitations for parents/guardians and their children and bi-monthly socialization groups that facilitate early learning, social-emotional development and family bonding.

We also provide identification of special needs children and support for them and their families; health screenings and referrals for children and pregnant mothers; coordination of services that address specific needs such as behavior and mental health.
