Los Angeles Unified School District is a National Center for Great Explorations in Math and Science (GEMS), originating from Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley. GEMS supports and facilitates science and mathematics education through a series of over 50 teacher's guides that provide low-cost, effective, inquiry-based classroom activities for preK-10th grade. As part of a growing national GEMS network, the LAUSD GEMS Center provides on-going workshops and leadership training for hundreds of teachers each year, as well as other strong support to L.A. teachers in the use of GEMS and other excellent instructional materials.

Each of LAUSD's five Math, Science, and Technology Centers has a full set of GEMS Teacher's Guides for browsing, and some sell GEMS guides or have materials available for the activities.

Another nearby regional GEMS Center is located in Huntington Beach, providing teachers in the greater Los Angeles Basin, including LA, with all the same support services as the LAUSD Center.
