It was founded in 1986 to revitalize and protect the Los Angeles River - a living urban river system - through inclusive planning, education and wise stewardship. FoLAR holds an annual Great L.A. River Clean Up, "La Gran Limpieza", in the spring at eight locations along the River between Long Beach and the San Fernando Valley and offers special activities within the group, including a Technical Advisory Board; public relations, education, fund raising and political action committees; outings and membership events. Given sufficient notice, the Board of Directors can also provide speakers on a variety of topics.
