The Caltech Precollege Science Initiative (CAPSI) supports several coordinated reform efforts in precollege science education. These efforts focus on encouraging inquiry and discovery in the learning process, promoting the active participation of under-represented student populations, fostering cooperation between scientists and educators, and encouraging teachers to participate fully in education reform. A primary goal is to provide materials and methods for improving science education that can be applied across the nation. The CAPSI effort began with an emphasis on the needs of elementary school children and has, more recently, begun wide-ranging programs in other areas. The elementary science program, originally dubbed Project SEED, is now the district-wide science program of the Pasadena Unified School District. Other CAPSI programs include the Pasadena Center for Improving Elementary Science Education.
