The Center for Marine Studies at Fort MacArthur is an educational program of the Los Angeles Unified School District in partnership with the Marine Mammal Care Center at Fort MacArthur. The program's activities focus on marine and environmental sciences for all students, offering close-range observation of sick or wounded pinnipeds that are being rehabilitated. Students can observe the animals' care and feeding and learn about the process that enables them to be returned to the wild. Additionally, two-hour tours let students participate in hands-on marine science activities, and schools may customize tours to meet students' needs at any level from pre-kindergarten to university. The Center also offers internship programs through San Pedro High School. The Center for Marine Studies also offers a three-day, two-night overnight experience for students in grades 5-10. This program is funded by LA-SI. LIMS and MSTEP trained teachers wishing to participate during the 1998/99 school year will need to apply through the LAUSD bulletin on environmental education programs. This bulletin will be sent to your school in early September.
