| Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies - University of Southern California Los Angeles, CA 90089-0373 213-740-1961 FAX 213-740-5936 Email: lwhitley@usc.edu | The Sea Grant Program at USC embraces environmental education as an important tool to manage the impact of urban population on the marine environment and ensure that minority students have opportunities to learn about the marine environment. Sea Grant provides teaching resources in English and Spanish, helps educators teach marine science and environmental stewardship principles to urban youth, and encourages teachers to adopt novel techniques that foster a sense of environmental awareness among urban schoolchildren.
Island Explorers, our marine science curriculum, is a multidisciplinary approach designed to teach science from the perspective of the Southern California marine environment. Students participate in hands-on activities in the classroom which help to demonstrate the relevance of science while imparting the necessary information. The program also has a field component in which students visit the Wrigley Marine Science Center on Catalina Island where they participate in field-based activities and small investigative projects. A 3 day island Explorers teacher workshop is also available at the Marine Science Center. USC Sea Grant is also collaborating with the Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies to develop a telepresence education program which will provide access to field cameras (both under and above water), as well as marine science educational activities and information on the World Wide Web and other electronic media.
