Visitors learn about Los Angeles as it was during the last Ice Age, 10,000 and 40,000 years ago, when animals such as saber-toothed cats and mammoths roamed the Los Angeles Basin. Through windows at the Fossil Preparation Laboratory, visitors watch bones being cleaned and repaired while, outside the museum, the 23 acres of Hancock Park feature observation pits and life-size replicas of some of the extinct mammals. School tours of the museum, curriculum materials, and other educational programs are available. To schedule a school tour, contact the school tours reservation office at 213-763-3333 at least 1 month before your planned field trip. No school group is admitted without a reservation.
