Interactive Mathematics (IMP) is an exciting four-year secondary mathematics curriculum and professional development program for secondary mathematics teachers. Based on the Curriculum and Evaluation Standards for School Mathematics K-12 of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (1989) and the California State Mathematics Frameworks, IMP has made substantive changes in the teaching and learning of mathematics. While maintaining the important skills from the traditional curriculum , IMP has shifted to a problem-solving curriculum; broadened the scope of the curriculum to include statistics, probability, and discrete mathematics; placed emphasis on developing reasoning, communication, and writing skills; expanded the student population studying high school core mathematics; based teaching techniques on instructional strategies which incorporate small group and whole class discussion to promote student understanding; and incorporated graphing calculators.
