| 7050 Owensmouth Avenue, Suite 206 Canoga Park, CA 91303 818-591-9363 818-346-9675 FAX 818-591-1970 | At the century-old Stunt Ranch homestead in Calabasas, now UCLA's "Stunt Ranch Santa Monica Mountains Reserve", the docent's field trips examine chaparral ecology and early Chumash culture for students in 1st -12th grades, and college. Students explore a variety of trails to learn about ecological concepts, basic plants, animals, and how Native Americans utilized the environment. During the hike they encounter various habitat types, taste sage seed, and observe a bedrock mortar. Activities at the docent's Katharine Spensley Nature Center include acorn grinding , cave wall painting, Chumash games, a display of taxidermied animals, and a mural story. Upon request, program components can be customized to suit a teacher's curriculum needs. programs last approximately three hours and include a packet of activities and background information. The fee is $120 per class; participation is limited to two classes (70 students). Register starting August 15 for dates between September 1998 through June 1999.
