The brick facade from one of the original 1912 buildings has been carefully restored and incorporated into the design of the new structure, which presently consists of 245,000 square feet. The Science Center offers engaging, interactive exhibits which can be found in World of Life, Creative World, World of the Pacific and Worlds Beyond, as well as throughout its public spaces. Visitors will meet Tess, the 50-foot animatronic star of "Bodyworks" in World of Life and learn, through a multimedia presentation, what the body does internally to maintain balance during exercise; experience the challenge of retrieving a damaged satellite in a virtual reality simulation while seated in a manned maneuvering unit in Worlds Beyond; or ride a high-wire bicycle 43 feet above Science Court and discover, first-hand, the principle of center of gravity. The Science Center also features a new IMAX 3D theater with a movie screen that stands 7-stories high and 90 feet wide, a state-of-the-art conference center with indoor/outdoor spaces for corporate events, new dining areas, including the Rose Garden Cafe, which offers breath-taking views of the downtown skyline, and a retail shop, the ExploraStore. Completing the Science Center is a neighborhood elementary school with a science-focus, scheduled to begin operations in the year 2000, and a resource center providing leading-edge science programs to educators, parents and youth groups.
