The Adopt-A-Beach Program is the educational arm of the California Coastal Commission. It was launched on the first California Coastal Cleanup Day and has grown from 1,500 volunteers in 1985 to 50,000 in 1997, removing 500,000 pounds of trash from California's beaches and waterways and turning Coastal Cleanup Day into an international event held on the third Saturday in September. The Adopt-A-Beach Program also includes Save Our Seas, a K-12 curriculum of hands-on marine activities and teacher training to help students understand the effects of marine debris on coastal wildlife and habitats; a year-round Adopt-A-Beach Program of cleanups by groups, schools and individuals; a series of Coastal and Marine Educational Resource Directories; and the new Coastal Protection License Plate.
