Curandera

by Calvin

This painting is full of interesting symbols. It has many details and it makes it appealing because its filled with different colors and shapes. There are flowers and plants throughout the Curandera's body. There are three large hearts within her body and head. Within these hearts there are people. There is a small figure beneath the Curandera's hands and it seems to be weeping. She also seems to be connected to something that is underneath her. The figure underneath her is a woman and her breast is connected to the Curandera. There is also a hovering face with wings above her. The diamomds that seem to be falling from the painting aren't exactly perfectly shaped. They are a little deformed and have another small diamond within them.

Each of these interesting symbols have a meaning. The flowers and the plants that go up throughout her body represent her need of these plants. For the Curandera these plants were vital because with these she cured many who were ill. The three large hearts with people in them represent how much love she had. Not only for the people, but also for Mother Nature without whom she wouldn't have these plants. This also helps explain why there is a woman underneath her that is connected to her. This woman is precisely Mother Nature. The fact that her breast is connected to the Curandera is a sign of nurturing. The smaller figure beneath the Curandera's hands represents a little boy whom she is curing. He is weeping because he is in pain. The hovering face with wings above the Curandera represents her spirit. The diamond-shaped objects represents her magic.

Personally, I think the symbolism in the painting is extremely important. It is necessary because it's what makes it more interesting and real. It also helps if you've read the book because you have a better understanding of the painting.
