The LAEP School Site Initiative seeks significant changes in the
organization, management and governance of schools. The Initiative's goal
is to establish and support school communities engaged in comprehensive
efforts to meet the needs of students and focused on the continual improvement
of instructional practices and student learning. Through the School Site Initiative, LAEP works to mobilize school communities to improve student learning and achievement. Program activities are designed to develop, test and demonstrate school improvement strategies while building the capacity of school communities to establish and sustain effective schools that reflect the best of research and practice. Initiative programs provide ongoing support, encouragement and assistance to schools engaged in the process of school improvement, and share effective strategies and designs with other schools. The LAEP School Site Initiative is carried out through two programs: The Los Angeles Learning Centers and the LAEP Learning Community Program. The Los Angeles Learning Centers are K-12 school communities designed to meet the needs of the children of the urban neighborhoods of Los Angeles. The Learning Centers design calls for significant changes in curriculum and instruction, school management and governance, and in how schools address the health and well being of students. The Learning Centers are currently recruiting additional K-12 school families to expand the Learning Centers model. The LAEP Learning Community Program supports schools engaged in the implementation of the LEARN Plan for School Reform. Program activities seek to establish "professional school communities" focused on the continual improvement of teaching and learning. The program helps participating schools plan for change and works with schools to build their capacity to continue the school improvement process. The Learning Community Program provides teams of parents, teachers and administrators with instructional transformation training, and links them in learning networks with other schools. Participating schools also have access to school change consultants, in-school coaches, professional development opportunities, best practice demonstrations and other resources.
