The Los Angeles Educational Partnership (LAEP) is an independent non-profit public education fund working to improve public education for the children of Los Angeles. Since 1984, LAEP has invested more than $35 million in the efforts of educators and community members to develop, test and implement new strategies for strengthening classrooms, schools and communities. Its work ranges from supporting the innovative efforts of individual teachers to the development of comprehensive designs for the schools of the future. LAEP activities are carried out through three major initiatives:

The LAEP Classroom Initiative is focused on the work of teachers. Activities include:

  • Individual program efforts to improve mathematics, science, and humanities education
  • Career academies focused on preparing students for the transition from school to work
  • Teacher network activities promoting teacher skills, knowledge, leadership and professionalism
  • Support for classroom innovation through the provision of grants and other resources
  • Affordable access to the Internet and technology, training and content.

The LAEP School Change Initiative seeks significant changes in the organization, management, governance and culture of schools. Activities include:
  • Development and dissemination of a comprehensive K-12 design for urban schools
  • Comprehensive support and training for schools engaged in the process of change.

The LAEP Community Initiative seeks to overcome barriers to student learning by building stronger links between communities and their schools. Activities include:
  • New strategies to increase access to health, social and community services
  • Strategies for greater parental involvement
  • Efforts to help schools listen to and communicate with parents and community members.

All LAEP activities are supported by the LALCNet, LAEP's telecommunications service providing educators low-cost access to the Internet and telecommunications training, by the LAEP Fund for Innovation, and by LAEP's public information program.
