The Challenges We Face

AS WE MOVE TOWARD THE FALL, and our thoughts turn to the new school year, many of us wonder about the condition of public education. What are the trends affecting public education today? Staffing, cultural diversity of students and staff, enrollment growth, and at-risk students, to name a few issues, all pose a formidable challenge to educators, students and parents alike.

In particular, the 1990s has been a time of great change for public education in California and Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Office of Education has compiled a comprehensive report "The Condition of Public Education in Los Angeles County -- 1996" which brings together a collection of information that answers many of the questions frequently posed by the public about their school district's past, present and future.
