L.A.Times Launches
Focus on Reading

WITH CALIFORNIA TRAILING THE NATION in reading scores, the Los Angeles Times has launched a major new editorial effort to shine the light on "Why Johnny Can't Read" and what can be done to improve literacy for California students.

This is an important new effort when you consider that despite strong evidence that students who cannot read by the end of the third grade are headed for academic failure, more than 100,000 third-graders in Los Angeles, Orange and Ventura counties failed to achieve grade-level reading last spring.
