No Se Habla Español;
English Only is the Law

AS OF AUGUST 2 IT'S THE LAW OF THE LAND. Proposition 227 mandates that bilingual education classes will replace all native language instruction with an English only immersion program. According to the initiative, "all children in California public schools shall be taught English by being taught in English."

With new classes in many schools in the LAUSD and other communities across the state beginning Monday August 3, educators are scrambling to prepare for this revolutionary change in instruction.

To help schools meet the mandate of Prop. 227, the state has issued emergency regulations that provide some guidance. Answers to some frequently asked questions can also be found in the Los Angeles Times article "Scrambling Toward 227."
