The Education Election?

1998 IS SHAPING UP TO BE the most important election year for education in recent memory. With education listed as the number one concern for voters, all four major gubernatorial candidates have staked out positions on what they would do to improve public schools.

Several statewide ballot initiatives also have significant implications for the state's education system. With the June 2 Primary rapidly approaching, this edition of the Learning Exchange offers our readers access to information on all the gubernatorial candidates as well as to information on the state ballot initiatives.

We have also included a transcript of the recent gubernatorial candidates' forum that was hosted by the L.A. Times and aired recently on PBS. For the latest election information, visit the California Secretary of State Web site. Get informed and vote!

Intitiatives Target Education

California's June 2 ballot includes three education-related initiatives that if passed would end bilingual education (Prop. 227), place a cap on administrative spending by school districts (Prop. 223) and curtail unions' political activities (Prop. 226).
