Integrating the Arts

THE LOS ANGELES UNIFIED BOARD OF EDUCATION recently adopted standards that will incorporate the visual and performing arts at all grade levels. The standards will be added to those already in place for history/social science, langauge arts, mathematics and science and health education.

The adopted standards will define what students should know in dance, music, theater, or visual arts when they graduate from the district, as well as being promoted from grades four, eight and ten.

Read the full story, check out the standards and take a look at how the Los Angeles Educational Partnership's Humanitas program is currently integrating the arts into curriculum with the help of the Getty Institute for Education in the Arts.

Tell us your thoughts about whether the arts should be an intregal part of a student’s curriculum.
