Research Project Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to begin our research on the various groups that have lived in Boyle Heights in the past. Each team is responsible for collecting the information on their assigned group and preparing the information to go on the web site. Each group will also make a presentation to the class.

  • Meet with your group to discuss the assignment and to decide on individual responsibilities.

  • Your project must answer the following questions:
    • When did your group move to Boyle Heights?
    • Where did they come from?
    • What route did they take? Did they come straight to the Heights or did they live somewhere else before they came here?
    • Why did they leave their homeland?
    • Why did they settle here?
    • Where in Boyle Heights did they live? Was there a particular neighborhood?
    • When did they leave?
    • Where did they go?

  • Once you have collected all this information you will write a short history of your group. This history should answer all the questions above. As you are writing it, underline all the words that will lead to a link on your web site. For example, when you are discussing how your group came to Boyle Heights, you can send your reader to a map that shows the route they took. (See below) Links should also be made to the photographs of Boyle Heights’ sites.

  • Your project should include at least two maps. One map should show your groups route to Boyle Heights. The other map should show the neighborhood where your group lived in Boyle Heights. These maps should be scanned and archived on a Zip disk as well as on your own personal disks. The Tech team will teach you how to use the scanner.

  • Your project should include at least two interesting web sites. We will find these during lab time.

  • Your project should include a bibliography. It should include books, videos, web sites, magazine and newspaper articles, and interviews. Be sure to use proper MLA bibliography style.

  • Your project should include at least one oral interview. Your interview should be video taped or audio taped. A transcript from the tape should be prepared and typed. The final draft should be added to your group’s file on the zip disk.
