Exploring Cyberspace
It is now time to do some research on the Internet. In order to do that we must first understand some of the basic terms and concepts of the Internet.
- Read Chapter 1 and 2 of Internet Activities: Adventures on the Superhighway. As you are ready, take Cyberquiz # 1-3.
- Each computer is set up with a web site that has information on each of the four major ethnic groups who have lived in Boyle Heights. Explore each site and fill out the Cyberlog activity for each group. Make sure you visit each computer and fill out each log.
- When we go to the the computer lab we will visit a site built and maintained by high school students in Rocky Gap, West Virginia. On this site there are several oral histories, photographs, and a walk through a virtual museum. Pay close attention because this is what we hope our site will look like. The address is http://www.teci.net/bland/rocky/archives.html.
- After you have explored the Bland County site, you should begin your search for information about your group. In your notebook, write the questions you need answered and the search phrases you will use. Have at least four combinations of key words to search. Remember the key to successful searches is a variety of key words and key word combinations. Also decide which engine you will use and the proper search techniques. For example, on the search engine that you choose, if you want to combine several key word phrases, should you enclose them in quotes, or type and between the words, or use a + sign?
- Download any information you find useful. Dont forget to get the URL address so that you can cite your information properly in your bibliography.
- Find at least two sites that someone reading your website might find interesting. Do NOT choose the first one you come across. Sites will be judged by their interest level, not the ease with which you found them.
- Using the website evaluation form, evaluate at least one of the sites that you visit today.
