School to Career Academies

School to Career Academies are high school curricular programs that combine college qualifying academic courses with technical classes designed to familiarize students with the range of careers available within a given industry and to prepare them with the skills necessary for entry level work.

LAEP directs and coordinates Academies of Finance and Travel and Tourism under the auspices of the National Academy Foundation (NAF) at five LAUSD high schools. LAEP also offers technical assistance to and acts as a liaison to industries for LAEP-developed Health and Information Technology Academies at Elizabeth and Foshay Learning Centers, the New American Schools demonstration sites.

Academies offer students the opportunity to shadow individuals in their job assignments, tour work places, and work as student interns, in either an unpaid or paid capacity. Professional development for teachers is provided through a NAF Summer Institute industry-sponsored events, facilitated by LAEP, LAUSD supported workshops, or special conferences presented by the California Partnership for Health Academies.

Achievements

  • Placed more than 180 Academy of Finance and Travel & Tourism juniors in paid internships.

  • Received special recognition at the Los Angeles Convention and Visitor Bureau's Annual Gala.

  • Foshay Learning Center’s Health Academy awarded a California Partnership Academy grant.

  • Admitted Belmont High School as part of the LAEP/NAF Academy network.
