Announcing the Helen Bernstein Award

Through the Helen Bernstein Award for Teacher Leadership, Los Angeles Education Partnership honors a teacher leader who manifests extraordinary leadership at the school site, in the community and in the field of education. As an organizational leader in education reform for over 25 years, LAEP is at the forefront of cutting edge initiatives. We have a history of supporting teachers and acknowledging leadership from the ranks of teachers who advocate and implement change for the academic success of their students.

The Helen Bernstein award is in memory of Helen Bernstein, President, United Teachers of Los Angeles from 1990 to 1996. Ms. Bernstein was renowned for her support of teachers, advocacy for student success, and belief in decentralized administration. During her tenure, she was a friend and colleague of LAEP. This award celebrates a teacher who exhibits the following attributes of Helen Bernstein:

An advocate of teacher-led efforts and education equity
A model and mentor to students, peers, and the community
A recognized leader by his or her peers
A leader who embodies LAEP’s principles of collaboration and building school and community capacity

The award, which includes a $1,000 prize, will be given at the LAEP 2013 Design Challenge on Monday, June 24. (Design Challenge details here.)

Not three but FOUR Gates Millennium Scholars!

One more Gates Millennium Scholar from an LAEP partner school brings the total to four! Congratulations to Bryan Queme, also from Fremont High School. He will attend UCLA in the fall.

LAEP celebrates three Gates Millennium Scholars from of our partner schools! Congratulations to Terrick Gutierrez, senior at Fremont High School, who will attend Morehouse as a Psychology Major, to Erick Rodriguez, senior at San Fernando High School, who will attend MIT, and to Andres Castañeda Humanitas Academy of Art and Technology at Torres High School who will attend UC Santa Barbara!

Funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, this scholarship will provide both of these fine students with a good-through-graduation scholarship, personal and professional development through leadership programs, and academic support throughout their college career.
